Weaving Dreams is an augmented reality learning game developed during the DIKE 2023 summer school in Kuching, Malaysia. The project focuses on the art of Pua Kumbu weaving on the island of Borneo, a traditional cotton textile used for sacred ceremonial purposes and healing rituals within the indigenous Iban community of Sarawak.

Traditionally, the dyeing and weaving processes of Pua Kumbu are governed by rules, prohibitions, and taboos that are deeply rooted in Iban beliefs. The patterns are considered sacred and are understood to represent the dreams of the master weaver. In recent years, concerns have arisen as these patterns are increasingly used for commercial purposes while the cultural traditions behind them risk being forgotten.

In response, the project team developed an AR application to convey the cultural context and traditions of Pua Kumbu weaving in an accessible and engaging way. The app was created collaboratively by eight participants—two from the University of Applied Sciences Berlin and six from various Malaysian universities—and is designed for visitors and interested citizens aged eight and above, with no prior knowledge required. Through a playful and immersive approach, the application aims to foster cultural understanding while respecting the perspective of traditional weavers.
